Field Education Programs and Resources
The SDSS Field Education Office runs several programs related to field education, field teaching, travel, and field safety. We also post resources and policies that are relevant to field education here. This list is updated regularly.
Alcohol and Controlled Substances on Field Trips
SDSS policy on alcohol and controlled substances on field trips is linked below. The policy is in alignment with university policy, provides more specificity to field situations, and has been reviewed and approved by the Dean and by Stanford’s Office of General Counsel.

Pre-travel Consultations
Pre-travel consultations are short (typically 30 minute) meetings to prepare travelers for any international, remote, or otherwise increased risk travel. The conversations are intended to connect travelers to resources across campus that can help travelers stay safe while traveling. The consultations are available to all SDSS affiliates traveling for research. Consultations are optional, but are highly recommended for any first time travelers, those traveling with Stanford University for the first time, or for any higher risk travel. Consultations are done in conjunction with the Director of Field Education, Global Risk, and Risk Management. Anyone wishing to set up a consultation should complete the form below. You will be contacted directly to arrange a meeting.
SDSS Field Vehicles
SDSS maintains a fleet of 4 large-capacity vehicles to support student, faculty and staff undertaking field trips, field courses and field research. For more information, and to make reservations, please follow the link below.
